With a ballnose tool and a "loose" stepover, we begin to notice what is called scalloping. This is the small ridge that is formed between the toolpaths and is shaped by the round nose of the cutter. Usually these scallops can easily be sanded off.

By tightening up the stepover by 50%, you can see that the scallop height is noticably reduced. With a ball nose tool, and a tight enough stepover, it is possible to get very close to a perfectly smooth surface on a complex shape, although this has a commensurate effect on the machining time.
