The strategy the machine uses for cutting the material is called the Toolpath. For most purposes, the CNC machine passes back and forth in parallel paths. The distance between these paths is known as the "stepover". A smaller stepover yields higher detail and a smoother surface. The image below illustrates a "mid-range" of the results of a few tool diameters versus a few stepover distances.
