There are many 3D scanning technologies - time-of-flight, triangulation, conoscopic, modulated light, stereoscopic ... our Cyberware 3D scanners use a strategy called "structured light". Here's a rough description of how it works:

- Project a vertical laser line onto an object.
- Observe this line from the side and you have a linear profile of the object.
- Move the line across the object and record its shape at regular intervals.
- Use this series of profiles to construct a 3D image of the object.
- Rotate the object, say 15 degrees, and repeat these steps.
- Stitch together the 3D images of the object at different rotations to form a complete 3D model.
